I wanted to play with flashes again and Viki suggested using the practice as a way to explain a bit about light and flash photography (I usually do speech bubbles but there was so much text that I decided to stick with text under the pictures, sorrrrrrry). I shall now hand you over to Viki...


Hi and welcome to my presentation, I'm sure it will go well and you'll learn some things about light and using it in photography.

You may be wondering why it is so dark here, revoL hasn't turned his flash up enough and he is using a honeycomb grid to direct the light so only I'm lit up.

That's better, now you can see the wall behind me too because of the angle of light.

He is only using one flash at the moment.

Here is revoL's wall, as you can see my shadow is very dark and very sharp, with a second flash my shadow would be lighter and softer. The honeycomb grid has created this circle of light without lighting the entire wall.

Now I think it's time to sit down and get revoL doing some work.

Now we have a fill flash to lighten my right side and a red flash lighting the backdrop alone, the honeycomb grid is cutting down how much white light hits the wall so the red is dominant on the wall.

See what happens when we add a blue flash? It does make a good backdrop with red and blue forming a purple hue in the middle and I am still lit up nicely.

Suddenly Cynthia appears and plonks herself on the chair next to Viki.

Viki: Now you can see that the honeycomb light is hitting both of us.

Cynthia: Ooh ooh, revoL, make us green!

Cynthia: Jelly! He has rubbed green jelly all over the front of the flash!!

Aurora appears behind the pair as if by magic.

Aurora: 'Ello, what izz yoo dooing?

Cynthia: We're being green.

Viki: revoL, white light again please.

Viki: That's better but just give me a moment.

She turns to Cynthia and Aurora to speak to them.

Viki: Girls, I really need to do this, I'm serious. I have some vital information to pass on about light.

Cynthia: Cool, consider us gone.

Aurora: I izz 'ere no more.

Viki: Right, where was I? Oh yes, four flashes, two coloured ones for the background, a main flash and a fill flash for me.

Cynthia creeps along the wall behind Viki.

Viki: If you take a close look at the wall behind me you'll notice something interesting.

Cynthia hunkers down behind the chair out of sight of Viki.

Viki: The only thing you see from this angle is blue light on the wall, ohh I've lost my thread, a blue wall isn't interesting.

Aurora sneaks in from the other side and crouches down, Viki is unaware although she has clearly lost all direction with her presentation.

Viki: Light, errr, flashes, urmm, honey-something ohhh

Cynthia starts playing with Viki's hair, distracting her even more.

Viki: COMB, yes, honeycomb ohhh, Cynthia I'm going to kill you.

Aurora entwines her fingers into poor Viki's hair too, that was enough!

Viki: So you are both back, you're like a pair of kids!

Viki ignores the two annoying friends and faces the camera.

Viki: On my next presentation I'll be showing you how to blow up two damned annoying Teddy Babes!!!

Where might I find Carly's valve? I would love to blow up her a... err, :eek: I mean that, umm... It would be fun to inflate her bum a little.:D

If you have a powerful flash and white walls or roof you can use it such as a big light reflector.

I don't have a very good camera, i can't make special pictures... :no:
