Default Olympus 2Mps Camera - Minus the beef

We, Elina and I first entered the competition in either April or May 2020 the theme was Lace. We faithfully entered each month until the Halloween theme, where both our minds went blank. The same thing happened with the Olympics theme, thereís not much scope in the way of competitions for a non standing doll to compete in.

When I joined I spent a considerable amount of time reading most, if not all the posts and threads from the year dot. The themed photo competition came and went after just a few months, then it came back again thanks to Tommo 10 and his dedication.

Not connected with the competition entries, rather posted photographs in general, I feel there is an almost obsessive use of face app. Whilst I will accept this can be a useful tool to have, even though I donít have it, I will eventually get it, probably on the laptop. Once I get the Android Emulator and load face app through it, then Iíll try it out. Although I believe that a photograph should be just that, a photograph not a manipulated image of something. For example, Elina and I spent a week, twice a day taking 210 photographs for one of her two upcoming ĎSeasonsí slide shows. They were taken using the natural light available, supplemented by three separate light sources, two of which were visible and intentional. However, once completed and played back on both the laptop and 32inch tv, the lighting was too dark to really see what was going on. Now I or rather we have to reshoot the whole thing again with a brighter, unseen light source. This goes against my original intention and belief that a photograph should be a true and accurate representation of what you would see if you were there at the time of the events occurrence. We do have a convenient get out clause though, as none of you have been in the room where the events will take place and have no idea of the lighting we have in that room, problem solved.

Regards

SJ & Elina Ell.

Hi SJ and Elina,

I don't use Faceapp. If my girls appear to have freckles they really have freckles. If their mouths are ajar there will be a marble or small stone in there. I'm old school from that perspective.

On the standing dolls. Two of the four in my entry cannot stand. And of the others, one of the most photogenic is almost rag doll level flopsy. Its all part of the fun that eventually all of us will do as these girls skeletons all loosen eventually no matter how carefully you treat them.

The pictures of Angel that won the competition a year back used a halogen electric heater (some distance from her) as lighting. I have also used a bedside lamp in the past without the shade on it.

I do admit though that as of last month I now have a pair of soft boxes and a ring light.... Typical. Finally invest in some equipment and the competition stops

What I was trying to say though was that you don't need really expensive equipment or purchased software to make good pics.

Here are those two. First using a halogen heater for lighting and taken using an Olympus point and click 2mp camera.

And then using a bedside lamp for lighting

the poor light made that second one turn out grainy so unsurprisingly Angel didn't pick up many votes in that competition but even so, I really like that pic and at the end of the day that really is all that matters. You are doing this for you. Not for anyone else. Although it is nice when others can see what you do in your images.

I don't edit my pics in that I don't use gimp or photoshop. But I do use Fotor. A bit of free software that lets you change the focus, exposure, contrast, etc. as I'm better with software than I am finding those settings on the camera.

Having the right equipment would of course help but don't think that you are being held back by not having it yet.

All the best,

Shamus.

If that pic didn't get many votes then there must've been some bloody good entries cos i love that. When using a point and shoot, low light pushes the iso right up but sometimes it can still look good. I tend to look at the composition more than technical quality and your pics always bring your girls to life which is a winner imho

It's a common misconception but megapixels aren't everything although people often think they equate to quality. A 1080p TV or monitor can only display 2 megapixels and a 4k TV or monitor can only display 8 megapixels. The main thing higher pixel count is good for is cropping the image down or printing in very very large format! Quality lenses and sensors are where the image quality comes from

Yep. This was my camera.

The internal electrics became really temporamental though. Think that it was about twenty years old when I finally got fed up of the number of spoilt shoots where it just decided "not today matey".

Sam helped me out with a canon Bridge camera that he no longer used. Really grateful to him as I had no idea at all what to buy. Thats the one that I use now. It's an sx30is. Took me twenty years to work out how to use the point and click. God knows how long it will take me to master this one but loving the adventure of finding out
