Making the best of Julia

Hi,

Julia is a bit "miserable" looking sometimes. She has asked me whether any of the experts on the forum have a view as to how she can make the best of herself.

Here are a couple of examples.

To my untrained eyes the second makes her look "better".

To me, in the first her open mouth is ok but looks much better at an upward angle.

I suspect her eyelashes and eyelids look heavy in the first photo. Perhaps not helped by the downward angle the lashes help create.

Any gentle suggestions (so as not to upset her) are invited.

Thank you, this is the sort of excellent help she was hoping for.
There is a painted dark eyeshadow and eyelids, apart from anything i helped her to put on. I will have a chat with her to see if we can hide it with something lighter.

I have a feeling the existing eyelashes will have to come off (they have tried several times already) and start afresh with something that curls up more to show a little more of her eyes.

You are certainly right that lightening that area will make her look more of a happy bunny (note the Easter reference:))

Don't tell and cruelty organisations but i have taken her tongue out (it just sat in her mouth) so her mouth will naturally close a bit more.

The first pic... The outer corner of the eyes look lower.. The 2nd pic you obviously changed camera angle and she looks happier. I remember when i first got skye she always looked pissed off. They cant change their expression so we have to do it for them and when you get it just right its a lovely feeling

Lighter eyebrows and eyelids - didn't quite come out to the colour i thought but lighter.

Eye positions are a bit of a pain, movement tends to be a bit clunky and despite me telling her not to move they change position when she moves her head.

Having said that i think perhaps a bit of an improvement?

Her left eyelid is a bit different from the right one so need to look at that.

I find that when I take photos of Callie, if i want her looking towards the camera, she looks better when she is looking directly at the lens, as if there is a connection to her soul.

I have been posing her, looking into her eyes, then putting the camera lens infront of where my eye is. I have been doing this with both the dslr and phone cameras.

I haven't done much close-up, more the upper or whole body and try to angle her head and eyes to change the perceived emotion

Just looking at the first two photos it‘s about the pupil. In the first one the eyelids cover her pupil which makes her look tired or unhappy. With the second photo from further down the pupils are free, which makes her look awake.
So when you take photos from further above you have to make her look further down, so the eye is free, and the angle on her mouth may even convey a smile.
You „just“ need to learn to pose the eyes correctly which is quite some work.

I will be using this app for most of my photography, not just smiles which are really limited in their number, but also for the subtle changes, like adding volume to her hair and adding to her freckles if they look too faded in the light. Also darkening or lightening her lipstick and things like that. You can even change the hair style to something shorter, or curly or straight etc.

Used in moderation, which I starting to learn to do, "Its magic."

not real sure how to work these girls since i only have a teddy babe. to me in the first two pics her eyes look too shut like the eye backs or stuffing need to be increased to push the eye out more so they are more open if that makes sense.

Yes i wish there was a way to lift her eyelids, possibly have to start by removing the eyelashes but it all sounds a bit open to going wrong. They certainly do not move smoothly when being re-positioned.

I now know, as well, that pre glued eyelashes essentially have the glue on the wrong side as they are designed to stick to the top of existing eyelashes not to the eyelids.

She doesn't look quite so good with only one eyelash though!

Sil-Poxy ordered so hopefully symmetrical eyelashes again soon!

Just be very light with the application of sil-poxy when attaching the eyelash. once its cured the sil-poxy will never come off as its a silicone to silicone bond, but the eyelash could still pull away.

As for eye position, Poppy has nailed it with the pupil position.

If you do a quick google (https://www.google.com/search?q=eyes+looking+up&client=firefox-b-d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwihx5fb3Z_3AhVTlFwKHQmnBpAQ_AUoAXoECAEQA w&biw=1904&bih=953&dpr=0.9) for eyes when they look up you can see the upper lid retracts and the pupil never comes in contact with the edge of the upper lid. Sadly our girls cant do this, so we have to limit upward movement and be vary careful how we position the pupil on the upper lid.

As Algae says, the eyes are the window to the soul, left-right movement is as important as up down. Remember also that as we look at things close to us out eyes actually begin to cross, co if you are doing closer in photography and she's looking down the lens her eyes may not actually be symmetrically placed.

Julia is stunningly realistic and detailed, and this makes her less forgiving. Its amazing what the human eye will "fill in" if its not there or just hinted at, but give it a lot of details and it seeks out the flaws.

She certainly makes me go cross eyed, it will help if the eyelashes stay on while moving her eyes. Or, she will just have to wear shades forever!

I am far from expert on any thing, but there is one thing that I find can make some faces look a bit more cheerful. If the lipstick coms to a vary fine up-curled point on both sides where the upper and lower lips meet. It takes a steady hand and a fine brush. It should be curled up ever so slightly and not be too thick so as not to make her look clownish at all.
That doesn't work on all faces, but might be worth a try.

My thoughts too :confused: Psion doesn't use any faceapp and can still make Kimber look lovely.

You can add your own freckles for example, with eyeshadow and a cocktail stick, as shown in one of Chloes tutorial videos.

Yes that could help, it is a bit of a pity she has he mouth slightly open (probably from continually having to tell me off!).

Both the clear and black seemed to work (on a piece of plastic - which of course is not silicone) they are still flexible when cured which should help when i am poking her eyes around. The challenge will be a very steady hand and just enough adhesive to to the job and not be visible.

Oh for a UK based hospital for the girls!

Oh for a UK based hospital for the girls!Of course you already know this, but make sure you pull the lip of the eyelid back when moving the eye if you can. Not sure if Julia has a hard silicone head or not and if you can still move the eye lids? On Kim you can move the top or bottom lids. Bottom easier for me because she has the closable lids on top!

Same with any kind of silicone, One you apply it and let it cure its there for good unless you cut it off. My point being, used sparingly if you intend to use silicone for eyelash attachment. I tried it once, Cleaned it all off before it cured, and went back to grumbling about superglue....

I hear what your all saying about changing your doll into someone else using FA. When I first started using faceapp I was using every setting available! It was really over the top. But now I've come to understand the program more I have toned it down a lot.

I still like to add the freckles on big closeups because I will definitely screw it up trying to use actual makeup! Freckles means imperfection and Kimberley's face in particular is too smooth and perfect for me. Kimber faces are cute, but let's face is not as realistic as other makes. (See what I did there).

Julia's face on the other-hand doesn't need any enhancement at all. I added some freckles because when the filters were on they hid her original freckles in the effect too much. If i hadn't mentioned it you would never know.

And then either add a smile or not.

I don't general mess with hair too much. Adding volume is just thicker hair if the wig isn't perfect in that shot. Wait until I get a shot of Kimberley where the short hair function works well, she'll look really cute when it works.

To finish off I like to add a filter, lens flare and such like just to enhance the photo. FA is great with this and its far easier than Photoshop. It makes the picture pop more.

I find the major thing that changes dolls into a more human person is the smile feature, but isn't that the reason for using faceapp on dolls? I think it is.

Please note I don't want people to just ignore my pictures because of Faceapp. I still have to work hard setting the shot up, and coming up with ideas. FA is just another tool, like the camera and lights, nothing more. It's magic, but doesn't do the shot for me LOL! When it works well it just makes her seem more human, at least to me. I think Julia looks great with her smile!

You think been a videographer it would be easy to capture photos, but it's a completely different skill set. I'm not as skilled as Psion and Karrot are. I'm trying to learn to be better than I am now, but who knows it may never happen.

I managed to get most of the lumpyness where it is hidden by the eyelash its self. Now to resist the temptation to fiddle while it is curing.

The new eyelash is a slightly different style to her left eye original but i might wait for that to fall off before changing it. I think the original might benefit from a short amount being cut from the ends.

Yes my super sized fingers are a good way of undoing the good work. I have some of the contact lens inserters but they are really a too flexible. I will certainly try the rubber end on a pencil - i might even have a go at slightly shaping it to grip better. Thanks for the suggestion.

She can be a bit "difficult" sometimes. One of her shoulders is not as stiff as it was so it does not do as well as the other one at supporting her arm in some outstretched positions.

I am not sure she could put her hand on the back of her head although she can put her arms somewhat backwards. I can get her hands near her hair at the side.

The hands can clearly hold a credit card so she is happy with that!

It can be quite a pleasure lifting her face to face (well actually chest to chest) holding her around her waist.

The honest answer is don't know. There does not seem to be any specific documentation on this version and shrugging is not mentioned in the generic documents supplied.

As you can see in the photo that position does twist the silicone somewhat and there are lots of warnings about that in the documents.

You can test it by simply pushing the shoulder up, and if it moves up then she has shrugging shoulders. Chances are this feature is an extra though, I know I had to pay to have it added for Regina even though she has the latest skeleton on the market.

I've looked at the photos on Cloud Climax of Alexa and none of them show her shrugging.

However to do what you did with her hands up, it should be NP. Yes the instructions will say not too but that's just to cover themselves. These dolls are quite tough in moderation, as long as you take them out of the extreme positions after the shot and don't leave it too long. Looks at some of Psion's pics and see what she is capable of... remember the power one where shes climbing on the kitchen bench :drool

BTW you should see what I put Kimberley through, and she has a basic skeleton and prob basic TPE. But she is a tough cookie! You can't really tell but in one of the nudes she has crossed legs sat on the bench. That's her legs as wide as they go to achieve it. Not for long though, a few minutes.

And it is quite runny but fast so it worked well just running some down the eyelash strip using a cocktail stick then holding in place (slightly higher on her eyelid rather than on the bottom) for some seconds.

I've met Alexa and she doesn't have the sort of vibe that you would expect her to have considering who she lives with at all... She's more like a mother figure (see the pic where my Elves were all sat around her for story time). She just absolutely captures the room simply by being in it.

As great a photographer as Psion is, I had never seen that in her until I met her... Or maybe she's different at home to when she's out meeting a bunch of cute Elves.
