Can I mention 2? Well, without waiting for a response, I will mention them both anyway.

Brazil - a staggeringly good film that just reveals more layers every time you watch it. I hated it the first time I saw it, and I don't know what possessed me to try it again, but I did, and as it started to make sense, I grew to love it. I heard it described as the film 1984 should have been but wasn't, and that seems an entirely fair perspective to me.

There will be Blood - criminally overlooked but a staggering film with a conflict at its heart that can be viewed at a personal, corporate or societal level and for my money, is the best piece of cinema I've ever seen.

(as for the previously mentioned films above, I loved Das Boot and Bladerunner but to my shame have never watched Serpico due to a mild Al Pacino allergy)
