Default New Years eve habits, shows, rituals...

Hello there,

I am curious about things done outside of germany during New Years Eve.

Here we mostly celebrate with friends. Get drunk, listen to music, have a party. Food varies, nothing special and in the evening we'll watch "Dinner for One" a sketch with Freddie Frinton and May Warden from 1963.

And as an oracle what the new year will bring we heat up tin and pour it into water and see what the resulting form is that will give a hint to what might come... On the other hand New Years resolutions are quite often made and two weeks later forgotten

At midnight usually some fireworks, a toast to the new year, phoning all friends and relatives not around.

This year - no fireworks, no parties, at least we have our dolls and zoom to keep in touch with our friends and relatives.

So I am curious what you are doing on New Years eve...

I can remember from my childhood, my grandmother would go outside before the clock struck 12. She would re-enter on the first strike of 12 with a piece of wood and some coal to bring the new year in. I think it's a tradition that stems from the druids, to help keep the sacred fire going throughout the winter months.

After we would all link hands and sing Auld Lang Syne. I still sing it now at midnight depending on how much beer I've had.

Ha ha.....that's a whole new thread right there and likely to be more divisive than the #LHP nonsense over on TDF

At the risk of causing WW III, what does Algae consider a 'thumping tune'? Curious minds need to know

OK, well my two favourite songs are "With or without You" by U2 and "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol.

...and a lot of light rock toons somewhere in between those dates...

Happy New Year to all of you and your girls.

Right now there's a TV show with the best of the 70s music. A blast from the past and a way to feel younger again The disco era comes back, yay but the outfits - yuck.

Ah, Dinner For One! It's a big Swedish tradition as well! And of course, Ivanhoe on New Year's Day afternoon...

This year was just Lynne and I, a few beers and whiskies with some good music and a couple of Zoom calls with friends. Just realised Withnail and I is on Film 4 at the moment, but I've watched it countless times... I quote from it often enough
